Memorial Day is a time to remember the brave men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. But it’s also a time to honor those who have served their country, which the roofing industry is proud to do each year.

As the nation remembers its fallen heroes during the Memorial Day weekend, roofing companies are doing what they can to thank veterans and their families. Below are just a few recent examples of the companies doing their part to honor military veterans by giving them safe and secure homes.

Navy Veteran Receives New Roof from Correll Contracting Corp.

ABC-affiliated WTEN reports that Robert Komornik, a Navy veteran in Johnstown, N.Y., received a new roof free of charge thanks to Correll Contracting Corporation.

The roof replacement, which was expected to wrap up on May 18, was part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. The project teams up with Owens Corning contractors as well as Purple Heart Homes to find and select veterans in need of a new roof. The program has replaced more than 350 military family roofs since 2016.

“[Komornik’s] roof has been leaking. It has three to four layers on it. It needs all new plywood decking and that’s a huge cost to replace it on [his] own. So, if we can give back to him by giving him a free roof then that’s the least, we can do,” Marissa Rubscha-Horton, president of Correll Construction Corporation, told WTEN.

JDH Remodeling Donates Roof to Maryland Army Veteran

Late last month, JDH Remodeling also took part in the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. The Kent County News was on site to report the story of giving back to an Army veteran who had to put off home repairs due to limited funds.

Jim Dodson, owner of JDH Remodeling, was on site with a crew of 10 to complete the job. Also on location were representatives from Owens Corning and Rebuilding Together Kent County. Owens Corning donated the materials and JDH Remodeling donated the labor to install the new roof for Deborah Scott.

“Two organizations I didn’t even know stepped in and helped,” Scott said. “They gave me a sense of peace ... new joy, new hope that I can finish what I started.”

Atlas Roofing, Best Nest Renovations Team Up to Provide New Roof

Chester Travis, a veteran in Georgia, struggled to afford a new roof for his home. The proud veteran, however, wasn’t afraid to reach out for help, and roofing companies answered that call.

In a brief story from the Henry County Times, Travis reached out to the Veterans Support Group for assistance with his roof. The organization secured a new roof thanks to the help of Brinson Jones with Atlas Roofing and Matt Nestor with Best Nest Renovations. Together, they provided the supplies and labor to complete the project.

ABC Supply Donating up to $1 Million to Homes For Our Troops

Earlier this month, ABC Supply announces it is matching all donations made to Homes For Our Troops – up to $1 million total – from May 21–30. It’s part of a campaign that includes dedicating the design of its Foyt Racing Chevrolet to the nonprofit.

Homes For Our Troops builds and donates specially adapted custom homes to injured post-9/11 veterans. It has delivered over 330 homes in 42 states and currently has over 84 active projects nationwide. Since its inception in 2004, nearly $0.90 of every dollar spent has gone directly to program services for veterans.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be back at the Indy 500 with A.J. Foyt Racing and raise awareness for our friends at Homes For Our Troops,” said Mike Jost, chief operating officer of ABC Supply. “HFOT is an incredible organization and we’re honored to play a part in bringing more attention to the great work they do.”

Beacon, Horch Roofing Complete Beacon of Hope Project in Maine

Beacon Building Products is continuing to deliver on its promise to provide deserving veterans with new roofs free of charge with its annual Beacon of Hope contest.

As NBC-affiliated WCSH reports, one of the six veterans selected in the 2022 Beacon of Hope contest, George A., recently received a new roof for his home in Scarborough, Maine. The U.S. Navy veteran was selected from a group of finalists located around the country. Horch Roofing installed the new roof.

"It's a real privilege to be able to help people out who are in need. And so when we had this opportunity, it was a no-brainer for me and my team to decide that it was a great privilege to give George a roof at no cost," Horch Roofing owner Peter Horch told WCSH.
